Call for research stay 2024
Aimed at students, professors or researchers interested in Cuban studies.
From the Cuba Program we would like to invite graduate students, university professors and social researchers to apply for the 2024 on-site research stay to be held at the Universidad Sergio Arboleda in Bogota, Colombia. The selected person will have the opportunity to share his/her work with students of the Semillero de Estudios sobre Cuba, in addition to having the opportunity to present his/her research, develop a course and publish his/her work in the media provided by the Cuba Program.
For this year, five priority areas are considered for the selection of applicants for the research stay:
- Gender and sexual diversity in authoritarian contexts.
- Media and social networks in authoritarian contexts.
- Analysis of the impact of economic sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela.
- Comparative studies on democracy and authoritarianism in Latin America.
- Migration crisis and U.S. policy towards Cuba.
Terms of reference

Graduate students, university professors and social researchers inside or outside Cuba are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be able to stay in Bogota for at least three weeks.

If applicants require a visa to stay in Colombia, they must specify this in their application.

Applicants from Cuba must commit to return once the research stay is completed.

Persons of all nationalities may apply without any distinction.

The person who is accepted must arrange his/her own accommodation, although he/she may ask for assistance from the Cuba Program staff to select the place.
Important dates

Opening of the call for applications: Friday, March 22, 2024.

Closing date: Friday, May 31, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Colombia time.

Announcement of the selected person: Monday, June 17, 2024.

Period of stay: between August and November 2024.
Benefits

Payment of round-trip economy class airfare (not to exceed US$1,000).

Stipend of 2000 USD for lodging, accommodation and meals.

Working space at the University.

Access to the University library and campus.

Visa fees for those who require it.
Commitments
-
Coordination of an issue of the journal Foro Cubano with at least 8 texts
-
Keynote lecture on the selected person's research topic (1 hour).

Short course of 12 hours (4 sessions) for University students.

Publication of the results of the stay in Programa Cuba (academic article, popularization book, research book).
Application
-
Resume including studies, publications, courses taught and research projects developed.

Proposed work plan for the three-week stay in Colombia, including short course, conference, Cuban Forum issue and resulting publication.

Brief research proposal including the problem, question and publication proposal, taking into account some of the priority areas of work.

Syllabus of the course to be taught at the University during the period of your stay, including description, thematic content and bibliography.
The application must be submitted in a single PDF file that includes the applicant's name and e-mail address on the cover page. A table of contents should include (1) the curriculum vitae; (2) the work plan; (3) the brief research proposal; and (4) the course syllabus. Selection process
Stage 1: All applications will be evaluated by the people who have already carried out research stays in the Cuba Program, so that each of these people will present a selection of three of the names they consider most suitable for the 2024 stay.
Stage 2: The three persons with the best qualification will be presented to the Dean of the School of Politics and International Relations, who in a meeting with the students of the Research Seminar and the Cuba Program team will choose the person who will carry out the 2024 stay based on the criteria of relevance and quality for the lines of work of the Cuba Program and the School of Politics and International Relations.
Note: The evaluation rubric to be considered by the Evaluation Committee includes: 20% resume, 25% work plan; 25% course; 30% research proposal.
